A Student Therapist’s Guide to Neurodivergent Affirming Therapy

You are currently viewing A Student Therapist’s Guide to Neurodivergent Affirming Therapy

For trainee counsellors, psychologists, therapists and other professionals.

If you’re a counselling, psychology or psychotherapy student, you may have noticed something missing in your training.

Perhaps you’ve been introduced to trauma, attachment theory, psychodynamic models, or CBT frameworks, but when it comes to working with neurodivergent clients, the guidance is often vague, outdated, or entirely absent.

You’re not imagining it. Most core counselling and therapy trainings include little, if any, content on autism, ADHD, or the broader neurodivergent experience. It’s common for students to be on placement without having had a good foundation in how to work with neurodivergent clients.

As a therapist myself, I know how confusing this can be. I remember trying to piece things together from medicalised textbooks, and outdated resources that didn’t reflect the clients I was starting to meet, or, as it turned out, my own neurodivergent identity (I’m late diagnosed autistic and ADHD).

My current work in neurodivergent affirming therapy often involves training seasoned professionals; counsellors, psychologists, coaches, to create spaces that are truly validating and respectful for neurodivergent clients. And while I believe this work is vital, I’ve also realised something important: we can’t only be speaking to those already deep in their careers. We need to start earlier. We need to be thinking about the grassroots of the profession. The students, trainees, and emerging practitioners like yourself who are still forming their foundations. Because when we reach you early, we’re not just changing individual practices. We’re reshaping the future of therapy.

That’s why I’ve created something just for you.

Looking Ahead: A Comprehensive Resource

This guide is just the beginning. My upcoming book, Neurodivergent Affirming Therapy: Rethinking Approaches for Autistic and ADHD Clients (Jessica Kingsley Publishers, May 2026), is a more comprehensive resource , one I hope will become a go-to companion for students and newly qualified practitioners across counselling, psychology, and psychotherapy training.

The book brings together theory, lived experience, practical tools, and original frameworks like the DIVERSE model and neurodivergence trauma cycle. Whether you’re preparing for your first placement or already sitting with clients, it’s written to help you meet neurodivergent people with greater insight, clarity and care.

You shouldn’t have to dig through swathes of academic journals, social media accounts and videos just to feel prepared for your first neurodivergent client. You deserve clear, affirming guidance , and your clients deserve therapy that recognises and respects who they are.
